I turned 40 not too long ago and have been enjoying the "Tex-Mex" food here at this particular Carmelita's since high school. (Yeah, I saw the upsetting "DD" news bit about here not too long ago. Want to know a secret? The safest place to dine out is one that recently got reprimanded! That means they had to clean up their act or they would be shut down.) Also, the "not authentic Mexican" reviews really crack me up. Carmelita's is not authentic, and that's a good thing. Most outside of the Southwest US, were never exposed to real Mex until a few years ago. Besides, authentic Mex is now available at many other joints. If this is what you seek, you should have taken the trendy BUS? Carmelita's is our local "KING" of the Americanized Tex-Mex food you grew up with. I only subtract the 1 star for sloppy management that resulted in that lame news story. As for their menu stand-outs? Just their simple refried beans beat the sombreros and serapes right off of ALL the other "authentic" Mex joints in our area. Seriously! BUS Who? Carmelita's refrieds are not only creamy but have a depth from being made with lard or bacon fat? You can taste that meaty goodness in every bite! Decadent... Plus sometimes, I really enjoy simple "gringo" tacos from my youth. Almost like I make at home, meaning a CRISPY corn tortilla shell, ground beef, and lettuce/tomato/cheese. Carmelita's are the very best in our area, and I've sampled many. Carmelita's also has great shredded pork tamales if you care for more traditional Mex fare. My favorite authentic Mexican dish is mole negro. Hoping to find an amazing one here is like hoping to see a giraffe at SeaWorld... Finally, the real menu secret here is their "kitchen special." It's just simple shredded beef, slow simmered in a complex sauce, served over rice with tortillas on the side. Sure, everyone makes mistakes. There is a reason this joint has survived so many years, and has spawned so many other locations... It's because they put out the best TEX-MEX in our area...

I'm not gonna lie, I love this place and have fond memories going as a kid. Yes, it's been around for that long. Their salsa is the best. So good in fact I get a large 32 oz container to go each time I visit. My go to is typically the cheese enchiladas, although the flautas and wet burrito are popular too. Btw this is the original location. No frills, but great tex Mex

After going to Los Mexicanos for years, we have found a new favorite Mexican place. The restaurant is super clean, much cleaner than it was when we first moved down here. The servers are very nice, and are very easy to talk to. The chips and salsa are THE BOMB. The salsa is so flavorful, garlicky and cilantro-ey. There is also a hot salsa, but I don't like spicy foods. For an appetizer, we ordered the sampler. The taquitos were very good and as were the quesadillas. The jalepeno poppers and the cheese sticks were good too. Main Course: I have always ordered the Del Rey burrito here. It is so flavorful and delicious. However, they are a little heavy on the sauce. The refried beans are so flavorful, and the rice is good but typical Mexican rice. The tostadas are awesome too. The only dud was the Chile relleno, a little too heavy on the batter. The fajitas are really good too. I love how they're not greasy and not salty. Although I'm not a fan, one of my family members is in live with menudo, which is a traditional Mexican soup with red chile, hominy and tripe. For dessert, we always get the fried ice cream which is awesome! I highly suggest you visit this place. You'll enjoy it!

It's my girlfriends and I first time coming here, and we both liked it and will return. We both had the cheese enchiladas, which were great, though I feel like they had too much brown sauce on them. They were better when I wiped off the sauce. The chips and salsa are a great starter too. Our server was very nice, though quiet. Our table was cleaned regularly and quickly. Being your friends! Lots of seating. Will come again!

Love dining here! Great food, family atmosphere, friendly staff. I love the salsa here! Family owned by folks who care about their community.

Nice family atmosphere. Latin music and great staff. Wife and I went for lunch. She had the flautas, I had the kitchen special. Both dishes were very tasty and the service was very good. We will definitely return.

Great food, very friendly. We had a large group and everyone was very happy with their food and portions. We'll be back!

I've been going to this restaurant since the 80's when they opened, I'd say I've been here over 100 times. One thing I can say about this place is consistency, always good service and good food. Their salsa is the best I've ever had, I always get a cup of it to go, and it's very easy to fill up on their chips too ! I've probably ordered the chicken enchiladas 95% of the time I've gone there. This location doesn't have a liquor bar, so not sure how they make their margaritas ? They finally renovated this location and it was needed and the new decor is very bright and clean. I don't think it's very traditional Mexican food, but it is good and you really can't beat the price either.

From the outside you wonder, "what am I getting into?". Then as you walk in you see how not so bad it really is. They have nice flat screens all over this joint for the big games of course!! They have a take out window. A bunch of seats to choose from with great views. The waiters/waitresses need to be more friendly with their customers or you won't get good tips!! Duh. The foods pretty decent and you get a lot. The salsa isn't spicy. I've been to better restaurants.

They have done a remodeling on their restaurant, with this new look they have also done a little update to the menu. Food is as always very yummy.

The manager at this place was the worst, told our party of 18 that we were "robbing" her because we wanted to use the Living Social coupons that we purchased... what horrible service, the manager should be fired for treating customers in such a disrespectful manner.

Have been coming here for years! I get w specialty dish not on the menu, a chorizo and cheese quesadilla and they come with 3. So good it's worth trying if you like Mexican sausage. The beer isn't too badly priced and the chips are delicious.

This is pretty much standard issue Mexican food, done better than expected. Really a 3 star place, but the execution deserves recognition, hence the 4th star. I had the chicken chimichanga. It seemed to be an entire chicken breast of a very large chicken, enclosed in a not too doughy crust, with a bit of a bean sauce. A lot of food. My wife had the fish tacos, and was happy with them. Portions were more than adequate, and the food was evidently freshly prepared. The obligatory chips are thin, and served with both a mild and a hot sauce. Each diner gets his own little bowl to pour & mix the sauces to taste. Service was friendly & capable, ambiance clean, Mexican music not too obtrusive. If you are in the mood for good basic Mexican food, this is the place.

This was the second time that I ate at Carmelita's. Both times were with a Living Social. Two friends and I stopped here on Thursday, March 13th around 8 p.m. SERVICE: We had an excellent server. She was always prompt with bringing things we asked for, and she made sure to stop by to find out how we were liking things. AMBIANCE: The restaurant is a bit older. There were quite a few people dining in, so it wasn't your quiet dinner out. To top it all off, they had a mariachi duo going around and singing at the different tables. FOOD: The food was average - your typical stuff. It's reasonably priced. OVERALL: I'd say stop in and give it a try, especially if you can score a Groupon/Living Social deal.

It was OK, but not great. I don't have anything really bad to say about this place, but not much good either.I tries to like it but I can't image I would ever go back. Service was fine and the interior was normal but the food was not awesome. If you want generic, unexciting Mexican food, (like my aunt and uncle) this is the place for you. The sides were bland and luke warm, while the mains were...OK. I keep using OK because its the best word to describe my experience. There was nothing wrong or bad, it just failed to impress.

Our waiter, Fernado, was awesome, but the food was not. Our "queso" was melted American cheese which is not what I go to a Mexican restaurant for. The shrimp quesadillas that I ordered were just glorified tacos and they had no taste of any kind. The food literally tasted like nothing and had no seasoning of any kind added to it. I would not recommend going to this restaurant at all... Not even with a living social coupon.

Are you kidding me, I eat here all the time but this was the first time I did take out. They wanted to charge me 3 dollars for chips, fine I said, jokingly I asked if it came with salsa, not thinking he is going to say no, guess what, 2.50 more. Are you crazy, who eats chips with no salsa. Assholes, guess what, lost a customer.

Service =2 Food =3.5 atmosphere =3. However I could literally drink the salsa, it's my favorite!!!!!!!! Not a fan of the queso, the enchiladas, or the black beans. I really enjoyed the Mexican pizza but note it is huge enough to share with more than two. My boyfriend gets the Delray combo every time and loves it plus he can't leave without fried ice cream. I also like the tortilla soup and the fajitas. We go back fairly often so it just about gets a 4... Maybe with better service.

I can't think of any reason to not give it 5 stars. Occasional slow service, but rarely. Everything on the menu is good.

My most favorite mexican food of all time. So authentic, I don't even think the cooks speak english. I have had dozens of meals at this location and never disappointed. Wait staff has always been friendly and the service was fast. Nothing too fancy, but not a dive. Excellent stop before or after shopping.

Good but not great food. Friendly staff, service a bit slow. Small basket of chips for free, more for an extra charge. Prices moderate, and comparable to other Mexican restaurants. No real issues with food, except to note that the Carne asada was as tough as shoe leather.

I wanted to like it more. the people were great, music was authentic, Margaritas were alright, not too sweet, but Even with the 'ask for it' hotter salsa everything is bland. Everything. the Tamales, the prepared 'hot' Chili Rellanos, the Mole Sauce we ordered as a side to help, the Rice & Beans. I AM from Texas and I'm hard to please when it comes to Mexican, but no bueno. !

We discovered Carmelitas some 7 years ago. When ever we vacation in the area or pass thru we always come to carmelitas. We had a group of 7 and 5 out of 7 get the tacos el carbon steak. They are flavored just right and very tasteful. For the past 7 years that all my wife and I get, delicious, along with the chips and excellent salsa and guacamole. Give them a try you won't be disappointed.

We dined for dinner Jan. 25. We took 2 of our kids and used a Living Social deal. We walked in and were seated right away (around 5pm). We were greeted promptly by our waiter. He took our Living Social certificate right away and said he would take care of it. He took our drink orders and brought them quickly with our chips and salsa. The chips tasted so fresh. The salsa is SO good. I don't like spicy anything and the salsa isn't spicy. They also brought a 2nd salsa that was spicy and my son and husband loved it. We ordered. As we waited I looked around the room we were in. The handpainted murals looked so clean. I was kind of amazed that they weren't dirty or dingy after so many years. Our food arrived promptly and was very hot (temperature wise). Everything was to order and delicious. I had the Del Rey Combo, it's my fave. My son had the Durango combo which he really enjoyed. My husband had the enchiladas and he was very happy! Even the children's chicken tenders were amazing! They must be freshly made. Of course my young daughter needed to use the restroom. It was very clean. I liked also that there was a mens, womens, and unisex bathroom. Our bill was great. We ate so much wonderful food for an affordable price. We have been to Carmelita's several times and they have consistenly offered a similar experience. We of course will be back again.

I'm from Austin, Texas and this is the real deal as far as good Texmex is concerned. Consistently very good with excellent service. The spicy salsa is fantastic (they ask you if you want it or just the milder salsa) and the combo enchilada plate is my goto favorite. This is the only legitimate Texmex place that I have found in Pinellas County.

The food is awesome but they need to fix the air conditioning! It is uncomfortable to eat here during the summer.

Blah blahr! NOT AUTHENTIC!!11!!!!1!! Wharggarbbll!!! ERMAGHERDDD!!! I've had mexican food of all types and styles, and I like what they provide at Carmelita's just fine. The sour cream chicken enchiladas might not be "straight from Tijuana" but they kick ass! Guess what? They'll put that damn addicting sour cream sauce on whatever you ask 'em to...and it's GREAT on a chimichanga! (mouth watering) Also, the "Mexican pizza" at 9.95 is one of the best values I have ever seen at such a place. It feeds two EASILY (it's huge) and is possibly one of the best "munchies" cures I've ever tried. SO GOOD! PROTIP: If you want it spicy, make it happen. Don't just whine about how bland it is here. You have to ASK for the "special" extra hot salsa. I do, then apply it to everything. Ouila! Spicy, sweat-inducing food! Floridians in general seem very heat-averse (almost every Mexican place I have been to here has a "special" salsa that you have to ask for). Don't blame Carmelita's, they are only serving what is popular in Floridexican food (low heat, low spice). This ain't gourmet Mex, or artisan Mex, or Southern Guadalajaran Regional Alt-Mex...it's Mexican Comfort Food - served with a smile in a great atmosphere at a VERY reasonable cost.

I have gone to Carmelita's for twenty years so this review is long overdue.I arrived at 4:00 and there was not many people in the restaurant which worried me a bit being that I haven't been to carmelita's in quite some time. The place is has been remodeled but it's still your standard mexican looking restaurant. You begin with the salsa and chips which you get the hot with the mild to make a tasty medium salsa. Our waitress was very attentive and accommodating which is always a plus when you go out to eat.I had the chicken enchiladas something don't remember the exact dish but with the sauce on top it looked like a mexican flag.My wife had the vegetarian option combo which she also enjoyed. The portions are huge and we both left with doggy bags and spent 30 bucks with the tip for two people which isn't bad.The place started filling up when we where leaving which showed me that this place still does a pretty good business.Carmelita's isn't fancy mexican food but it's good mexican food.

Best Mexican restaurant I have ever eaten at. Go for the enchiladas, or at least get that sour cream sauce on whatever you order. It's delicious and not a slop of rice queso and tortilla like so many Mexican places are. My favorite. It's consistent, filling, and delicious. All other Mexican places pale in comparison.

I loved this place. It's so close to my house I don't know why I haven't gone earlier. The menus has a nice variety and the portions are big. I loved the Sangria so much I had to have another glass which I never do. I also love fried ice cream and theirs was OK but I have had better.

This was my first time at this restaurant. The inside needs a lot of upgrading along with the furniture. Everyone was very friendly and nice. As soon as we were seated, the waiter Jeff brought us a bowl of chips with salsa. The salsa was the best! Our meals came out quickly after we ordered. We had the chicken enchiladas with Spanish rice and corn. The enchiladas was good but had too much sour cream on top. Needless to say, we left full and enjoyed the duo Mexican singers that sung at our table. Wouldn't mind going back after they upgrade the restaurant.

I'm always in search of a good mexican place. And I have heard many good things about Carmelita's so finally decided to give it a try. It's definitely more American Mexican that most people are used to (although I was pleasantly surprised to see Menudo on the menu), but overall it was pretty good! We started with a half order of gaucamole, which is plenty for two people. The gaucamole was really good...nice chunks of avocado in it just like it should be made. The chips were pretty generic, but not salted, which I liked. The regular salsa tasted like pizza sauce to me, but our waitress also brought us the hot salsa, which was much better and pretty spicy! I got a margarita on the rocks, which was HUGE. It wasn't the best margarita I've ever had...a bit too sweet? Couldn't put my finger on what tasted off to me. But goodness it was potent ;) For my entree I got the Enchilada Verdes, which had seasoned chicken, verde sauce and their sour cream sauce. It was a bit too saucy for my liking, but was really good. Everything tasted pretty fresh. Mexican rice and pinto beans on the side were also great. I pretty much cleaned my plate. The waitress also brought over a hotter version of the verde sauce for to try. Too spicy for me, but those who love sweating while eatting should certainly be happy here. The prices were great as well. All entrees seemed to be around $10. With the gaucamole, two entrees and two drinks our bill was $33. Not bad at all. Turn offs of this place are the carpeting. I just hate carpet in restaurants. It looks dirty and a bit tacky. Another thing is the God awful outfits they make the women servers wear. They're the flowy skirts and off the shoulder tops and are just too kitscy for my taste. It would be a lot better too to have them wear a uniform they can all look good in. Our waitress was super nice, but had tattoos and just looked really out of place wearing something like that. Also saw a woman wearing sneakers with the outfit as we left, which also didn't look good. Those are minor things though. Had a great first experience and will definately be back!

  • Danielle D.

First of all I don't know how they get anyone to work in this place with the ridiculous outfits the servers have to wear. Well we quickly figured it out...she was real rough around the edges and not that friendly. The atmosphere was what I would expect for a cheap Mexican restaurant in Florida...not too spectacular. They do have a little singing duo that comes around to your table and play guitar while they sing. Glad they didn't make it to our table. Not a fan of people standing at my table while I just want to eat with my family. Food was decent, but nothing to write home about. We did get guac and the queso which were good. Won't be returning.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
